Mindfulness is a term that can have multiple interlinked meanings. It can be a state of awareness, a trait, a practice, part of a toolbox of several practices, or quality of behavior. Sometimes it is a term that is thrown around without full consideration into these meanings; however, when trying to foster mindfulness in your everyday life, we will assume the definition of a state of awareness or practice.

When practicing mindfulness, keep these three characteristics at the forefront.

  • Intention to develop awareness and return to it often
  • Paying attention to what is happening in the current moment
  • Having an attitude that is non-judgemental and kind

And use these 4 tips to help you cultivate mindfulness daily:

  1. Practice mindfulness meditation for 5-10+ minutes a day. This type of meditation can easily be done without a guide, but there are plenty of free apps or tools to help you. If doing it alone you pay attention to your thoughts as they pass through your mind. You do not judge the thoughts or become involved with them. You may find it helpful to focus on an object or your breath while you observe any bodily sensations, thoughts, or feelings.
  2. Take a few mindful minutes throughout the day - take deep breaths and bring your awareness to the present. Try to separate your awareness from the thoughts that enter your mind. Notice the things around you and how you interpret them.
  3. When eating or drinking, bring your attention to the taste, smell, and texture of your food. Eat slowly and try not to think of anything else. Tezahn herbal cold water infusions are a great way to try this out. The herbal aromas, the complex tastes of the spices, and the coolness of the water can all be taken in slowly to enhance your experience with the product.
  4. Do a body scan. Close your eyes and be deliberate about feeling each part of your body. Start with your toes (wiggle them, for example) and work your way up. Go as slowly as you would like!

Why is mindfulness important?

In the context ofholistic health, mindfulness can helpimprove your physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being.

  • Physical: by lowering blood pressure, relieving stress, reducing chronic pain, improving sleep and concentration
  • Emotional and mental:by helping you cope with negative emotions, reducing anxiety, increasing your ability to relax, and improving self-compassion
  • Social: by reducing irritability, decreasing depressive symptoms, and enhance relational qualities
  • Spiritual: by improving your ability to concentrate on the present and approach meditation in a non-judgemental and curious way

However you choose to cultivate mindfulness, there will be increased benefits the more you do it. So sit back and soak in the present moment with an open mind and a clear heart.
